Bakongo Fetish Statue with Nails - Congo DRC - Set of 2 Minkisi Nkondi
Old Bakongo Fetish Statue with Nails - Congo DRC - Set of 2 Minkisi Nkondi
Description of the object:
A magnificent set of two Bakongo fetishes. These nkisi nkondi statues are emblematic ritual objects of Kongo culture, recognized for their spiritual power and their central role in rituals of protection, justice and conflict resolution.
The minkisi nkondi, famous for their nails that cover their surface, are force objects manipulated by the nganga (ritual specialists). The latter use these fetishes to invoke powerful spirits in the context of various rituals. Each nail, a symbol of pain inflicted on the invoked spirit, intensifies the power of the nkisi.
The set presented includes:
• A large anthropomorphic statue with glass eyes, a studded necklace.
• A small anthropomorphic statue, also with glass eyes and a glass outgrowth on the belly, symbolizing a connection to the world of ancestors.
These pieces demonstrate great craftsmanship, both in wood carving and in the inlay of materials.
