Wooden Venavi twin boy statuette, Ewe, Togo early 20th century

Male anthropomorphic statuette in carved wood, from the Ewe ethnic group in Togo. Honey-colored wood. The hair and feet are black, while the eyes are painted white with black pupils. The statuette is shown standing with its arms at its sides, in a resting position.

Venavi dolls represent the lost twin. They were revered and cared for by their parents. They can be male, female or in pairs, depending on the sex of the newborn.

Provenance: private collection. In its original state, beautiful patina, traces of age and wear.
