Antique Chinese wine or alcohol jar – 18th century

Rare glazed stoneware pot, turquoise green enameled with beautiful crackle glaze.

Origin: Southern China (probably Hunan or Yunnan), known as the “Martaban” tradition.

Period: 18th century (Qing dynasty)

Material: stoneware covered with a coppery green/blue glaze

Function: utility jar for storing and transporting rice wine or other alcohols

Globular body

Wide flared neck with brown lip

Side spout

Tubular handles and rings for attaching a rope or lid

Dimensions:

Height: 25 cm

Maximum diameter: 21 cm

Opening: 12.5 cm

Base: 19 cm

Weight: 1.2 kg

Condition: beautiful antique patina, wear consistent with age, visible cracks and mineral deposits, small chips on the neck and spout (see detailed photos).

These jars were used in rural China to store wine and are distinguished by their very characteristic green glaze, now sought after by collectors of Asian art.
