Tabernacle door from the 18th-century church in Vouvant + 2 twisted columns
Former church tabernacle door accompanied by two twisted columns in gilded wood.
A handwritten inscription on the back clearly indicates its origin:
“Former tabernacle of the church of Vouvant.”
This refers to the Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption, a Romanesque building classified as a historic monument located in Vouvant (Vendée).
The ensemble appears to date from the 18th century, judging by the style of the carving and gilding.
The door features rich carved wood decoration: winged cherub heads, garlands of leaves, sprays of foliage, fruit, and an ornamental arch above. The two columns are twisted and decorated with foliage, probably intended to frame the tabernacle.
There is an empty space at the top of the decoration, under the arch. This space may have held a small carved element (a religious symbol or ornament). This remains a hypothesis.
