Watercolor “Kachin Man” – Ethnographic portrait Burma, circa 1920–1950
Beautiful watercolor depicting a Kachin man from Burma/Myanmar, in bust form, wearing a rich traditional costume adorned with tassels, jewelry, and a decorated headdress. The subject is captioned “Kachin Man” in pencil and signed in the lower right corner (signature reads “Lin Ill,” an artist not listed but probably active in Burma in the first half of the 20th century).
The colors are vivid, with beautiful work on the textiles and ornaments, in line with the ethnographic portraits made for travelers and collectors during the colonial period.
Some slight traces of age may be visible on the paper, but this does not detract from the decorative power of the whole, presented in a simple modern frame, ready to hang.
This piece will appeal to lovers of Asian art, ethnography, Burma, and traditional costumes.
