Watercolor painting “Padaung Woman” – Ethnographic portrait Burma, circa 1920
Beautiful watercolor depicting a “Padaung Woman” (or “Padeung Woman”), a woman from the Kayan-Padaung group known for her brass neck rings. The subject is captioned “Padaung Woman” in pencil and signed in the lower left corner (signature reads “Lin Ill,” an artist not listed in any catalogues but probably active in Burma in the first half of the 20th century).
The colors are vivid, with beautiful work on the textiles and ornaments, in line with the ethnographic portraits made for travelers and collectors during the colonial period.
Some slight traces of age may be visible on the paper, but this does not detract from the decorative power of the piece, which is presented in a simple modern frame, ready to hang.
This piece will appeal to lovers of Asian art, ethnography, Burma, and traditional costumes.
