Kabyle plate, dish in hand-painted terracotta – late 19th / early 20th century
Antique Kabyle hand-painted terracotta plate or platter – late 19th / early 20th century
Superb hand-painted terracotta plate or wall platter, of Kabyle origin (Algeria), probably dating from the late 19th or early 20th century. This type of ceramic was part of the artisanal tradition of the Berber populations of northern Algeria, combining domestic utility and artistic expression.
The piece is decorated with stylized geometric and plant motifs, including birds, all hand-drawn in natural black and red pigments. The center is adorned with a geometric medallion surrounded by traditional symbols. The rim is decorated with a characteristic brick-red wavy pattern.
The back shows traces of smoking, typical of firing in a rudimentary kiln or over a wood fire. The plate is equipped with a modern spring-loaded suspension system for secure wall hanging.
