A beautiful antique ceramic plate from southern China, Zhangzhou region (also known as “Swatow ware”), dating from the late Ming dynasty, circa 1600–1625.

This piece is one of a number of items produced for export to Southeast Asia and the Islamic world. It features freehand decoration painted in underglaze blue, in a loose style reminiscent of cursive calligraphy. This type of spontaneous composition is typical of Swatow pieces known as “sketchy” decoration.

Origin: China, Zhangzhou (Swatow)

Period: Late Ming dynasty, circa 1600–1625

Material: Glazed porcelain stoneware

Decoration: Hand-painted in underglaze blue

Base: Unglazed, with original firing marks

Condition: Good overall condition for its age. No restoration. Natural cracks, small original firing defects (inclusions, bubbles, drips)
