A beautiful antique ceramic plate from southern China, Zhangzhou region (also known as “Swatow ware”), dating from the late Ming dynasty, circa 1600–1625.
This piece is one of a number of items produced for export to Southeast Asia and the Islamic world. It features freehand decoration painted in underglaze blue, in a loose style reminiscent of cursive calligraphy. This type of spontaneous composition is typical of Swatow pieces known as “sketchy” decoration.
