Antique Lobi wooden bateba, authentic patina, West Africa. Late 19th century
Antique African statuette, attributed to the Lobi people of West Africa (present-day Burkina Faso/Ghana), of the Bateba type.
Carved from dense wood, the statuette features a deliberately simple, frontal aesthetic. The face has closed eyelids, rendered in a restrained manner, characteristic of Lobi domestic protective figures.
The surface displays an old patina from use, very smooth to the touch, without wax or varnish, resulting from repeated handling.
The statuette shows traces of old attachments (patinated holes) attesting to its use.
Mounted on a metal base.
In its antique condition, with cracks, fissures, and natural alterations to the wood consistent with age and prolonged use.
No modern restoration is known.
Estimated date: late 19th – early 20th century.
