Boite à bétel khmer en forme de biche couchée, argent

Khmer betel box in the shape of a reclining doe, silver, 19th century Cambodia

Antique Khmer culture betel box. The box depicts a deer lying on its side, legs folded forward. Made of embossed silver with an ethnic bas-titre, the decorative details and precision are superb.

No hallmark.

For the record, betel is a substance derived from betel leaves and nuts of the same tree, used in Asia in particular for its tonic effect. It is used as a chewing preparation.

Good condition, in its original juice with traces of age and wear, original patina. As the silver's titration is low, the patina is not the same as for 925 silver.

This is an authentic antique object that could complete a cabinet of curiosities or an Asian Art collection.
