Ancient ritual bracelet made of leather and cowrie shells – West Africa – late 19th century
Ancient ritual bracelet or anklet made of leather and cowrie shells – West Africa
Ancient ritual bracelet or anklet from West Africa, decorated with natural cowrie shells sewn onto thick leather.
The leather, preserved raw on the inside with hair still present, has become stiff over time, a sign of traditional craftsmanship and genuine age.
The cowrie shells, individually sewn on with leather straps, clink together when moved, producing a rhythmic sound. This type of adornment was used during ceremonial dances or community rituals.
The wooden peg fastening system, visible on the object, is typical of ancient assemblies. The patina of the leather, the natural wear and tear of the cowrie shells, and the absence of modern materials allow us to date the manufacture to between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
