Rare secret box in the shape of a book (“trompe-l'oeil book”), made in France around 1790–1820. Authentic object designed to blend into a bookcase to conceal jewelry, letters, or money. Cabinet of curiosities

Characteristics:

• Period: late 18th–early 19th century (1790–1820)

• Provenance: France

• Material: marbled calfskin, small iron gilding; leather-covered wooden interior

• Dimensions: H 8 inches x W 3.7 inches x D 5.7 inches – Weight approx. 3.3 lbs

• Book titles on spines:

• Red and gold edges, hand-gilded

• Original blade hinge, fixed with small nails, functional

Condition: good condition for its age. Leather with patina, rubbing and small losses on the corners and minor damage; gilding still visible; interior clean; solid hinge. No recent restoration.

Authenticity: handcrafted (real raised bands, hand-gilded, marbled calfskin, antique hinge). Period 1790–1820, not a later reproduction.
