Antique engraving “ARCTIC REGIONS – Samoyeds, Eskimos, Lapps,” 19th century
Beautiful 19th-century engraving depicting a group scene entitled “ARCTIC REGIONS,” bringing together Samoyeds, Eskimos, and Lapps in traditional costumes, with dogs and a tundra landscape in the background. The plate is signed “Philippoteaux del.” and “Nargeot sc.”, engravers active in the great illustrated works of geography and history of the mid-19th century, here in a finely tinted steel engraving then enhanced by hand.
The paper shows uniform browning and a few small age spots, without altering the legibility of the scene or the charm of the slightly faded colors; the print is highlighted in a simple modern frame, ready to hang.
This piece will appeal to lovers of ethnographic engravings, circumpolar peoples (Inuit/Eskimos, Sami/Lapps, Siberian peoples) and 19th-century geographical illustration.
