Original engraving “Warrior of Souraki” – after Auguste Wahlen, 1844
Superb costume engraving entitled “Guerriero di Souraki,” depicting a Maori warrior in battle dress, tattooed (moko), wearing a cloak, an ornate skirt, and armed with a club, standing full length. This plate comes from the Italian edition (Fontana, Turin) of the series of Oceanian costumes based on Auguste Wahlen, linked to the work “Mœurs, usages et costumes de tous les peuples du monde” (Customs, traditions and costumes of all the peoples of the world), based on drawings by Louis-Auguste de Sainson made during Dumont d'Urville's voyage.
The engraving, a hand-colored lithograph, dates from around 1844; the paper shows some browning and signs of age but retains its deep colors (particularly the yellow headdress and purple cloak), currently highlighted in a simple modern frame, ready to hang.
This piece will appeal to lovers of Oceanic engravings, Maori culture, and 19th-century travel iconography.
