Original engraving “Warrior of Tonga Taboo” – after Auguste Wahlen, ca. 1844
Beautiful period engraving depicting a “Warrior of Tonga Tabou,” a Tongan warrior figure in traditional dress and armed, from the series on the peoples of Oceania published in the wake of Auguste Wahlen's work “Mœurs, usages et costumes de tous les peuples du monde” (Manners, Customs, and Costumes of All the Peoples of the World). This is an original 19th-century engraving, probably from an Italian edition (“Guerriero di Tonga Tabou”), finely hand-colored, showing the figure in motion against a simplified landscape background.
The sheet shows foxing and signs of age consistent with its age, but retains beautiful colors and marked ethnographic interest, enhanced by a simple modern frame, ready to hang.
This piece will appeal to lovers of antique engravings, Oceania, ethnography, and 19th-century travel illustrations.
