Original engraving “Harfur di Tondano” – after Auguste Wahlen, 1844
Beautiful antique engraving depicting a “Harfur di Tondano” from the Celebes Islands (Sulawesi), a barefoot figure richly adorned with necklaces, wearing a patterned loincloth and equipped with a spear and a large decorated shield. This plate comes from the Italian edition of a series of costumes published in Turin in the mid-19th century, derived from Auguste Wahlen's work on the customs and costumes of all the peoples of the world.
The engraving, described by dealers as a finely hand-colored “stampa antica,” shows uniform browning of the paper and some signs of age but retains its deep colors and highly decorative design, now highlighted in a simple modern frame, ready to hang.
It will be of interest to collectors of engravings from Indonesia, Sulawesi/Celebes, and 19th-century ethnographic portraits.
Framed by us to ensure the protection of the engraving and enhance its presentation.
