Original engraving “Afghan Soldier” – after Auguste Wahlen, circa 1844
A beautiful engraving of a costume depicting an Afghan soldier in traditional dress, rifle over his shoulder, from Auguste Wahlen's renowned ethnographic series, "Customs, Practices, and Costumes of All the Peoples of the World." This finely hand-colored steel engraving or lithograph shows an Afghan warrior (Durrani/Pashtun tribe) against a sketched backdrop, with the Italian title "Soldato Afghano" (Afghan Soldier).
The print has a warm patina, with slight browning and a few small foxing spots, but the image remains fresh and decorative. It is currently framed in a simple, modern frame and ready to hang.
This piece will appeal to collectors of antique engravings, 19th-century Afghan history, and Oriental military costumes.
The framing was done by us to ensure the protection of the engraving and enhance its presentation.
