Original engraving “Timor. Canda, Malay girl,” ca. 1800
Beautiful original engraving depicting “Timor. Canda, a young Malay girl,” from the atlas of the Voyage de découvertes aux Terres Australes (Nicolas Baudin expedition), drawn by Nicolas-Martin Petit and engraved by Barthélemy Roger. This is an ethnographic plate showing a young woman from Timor carrying two large baskets suspended from a balance beam, with finely enhanced period colors.
It is a copperplate engraving (copper-steel) printed in black, then hand-colored (watercolor) on laid paper.
The sheet has some minor foxing and signs of age, but the print remains fresh and highly decorative, enhanced by a simple modern frame ready to hang.
This piece will be of interest to lovers of antique engravings, ethnography, exploration, and the history of Indonesia/Timor.
Framed by us to ensure the protection of the engraving and enhance its presentation.
