Original engraving “Timor, Free Malay,” ca. 1800
Beautiful original engraving depicting “Timor, Free Malay,” from the atlas of the Voyage de découvertes aux Terres Australes (Nicolas Baudin expedition), drawn by Nicolas-Martin Petit and engraved by Lambert Frères. This is an ethnographic plate showing a man from Timor walking, with finely enhanced period colors.
It is a copperplate engraving (copper-steel) printed in black, then hand-colored (watercolor) on laid paper.
The sheet has some small foxing and traces of age consistent with its age, but the print remains fresh and very decorative, enhanced by a simple modern frame ready to hang.
This piece will be of interest to lovers of antique engravings, ethnography, exploration, and the history of Indonesia/Timor.
Framed by us to ensure the protection of the engraving and enhance its presentation.
