Original 18th Century Engraving – Anatomy of a Tortoise (Plate I)
A rare and authentic copperplate engraving (intaglio) from the famous Encyclopédie project (or Panckoucke's Encyclopédie Méthodique). This document is a direct testament to the Age of Enlightenment and the desire to compile the scientific knowledge of the time.
The subject is "Natural History - Plate 1." A masterful anatomical study of a tortoise, presenting a detailed internal view of its organs and musculature.
Engraving direction: Robert Bénard (inscribed "Benard Direxit" in the lower left). Bénard was the engraving director for the Encyclopédie, ensuring the technical accuracy of the plates.
Drawing: Attributed to the workshop of Jacques de Sève, a great 18th-century natural history illustrator.
A fine contemporary impression. Natural foxing and patina confirm its age. The plate mark (imprint of the copper plate) is visible.
