Original engraving “North America” – Native American chiefs – 19th century
Beautiful 19th-century steel engraving depicting three Native American chiefs in traditional dress: “Chief Pani,” “Mandane,” and “Chief Assiboine,” with a woman in the background and warrior attributes (shields, headdresses, pipes, spears) laid out on the ground. The plate is captioned “AMÉRIQUE DU NORD” (North America) and bears the inscriptions “Philippoteaux del.” and “Waltner sc.”, linking the artist Philippoteaux to the engraver Charles-Albert Waltner, known for his prints based on works by great painters and for his illustrated historical and geographical works.
The sheet has a slight patina and some small foxing consistent with its age, but the colors remain fresh and the image is very decorative; it is highlighted in a simple modern frame, ready to hang.
This print will appeal to lovers of Native American iconography, the peoples of the Plains (Pawnee, Mandan, Assiniboine), and 19th-century ethnographic engravings.
