Makonde satirical dance crest mask, Tanzania-Mozambique
Old African mask of the Makonde ethnic group of Mozambique or Tanzania. To be worn on top of the head, the crest represents a male head with an open mouth and creoles on the ears (one missing). This helmet-mask or crest is a MAPIKO dance mask. It is a traditional dance of the Makonde and Mavia people, originally practiced during ritual ceremonies and community celebrations, the dance was also used as a form of cultural resistance during periods of colonization and oppression.
This is why the crest here is a satirical representation, these people having suffered from the slave trade and slavery.
