Buffalo head mask, Mama tribe, Nigeria
Real Mama dance crest mask, representing a stylized buffalo head, in grained wood and feathers, presented on a base. The horns form a circle, the muzzle is carved in projection, and the wood is covered with red ocher mineral dye.
The horns symbolizing fertility, this mask is worn during festivals in connection with agricultural fertility and sometimes human fertility. The dance is meant to bring prosperity to the tribe.
The ceremonies during which this type of mask is used are called Mangam.
