Pair of antique Moroccan wrought iron stirrups – 19th century – Berber equestrian
Pair of antique Moroccan wrought iron stirrups, entirely handmade, dating from the 19th century (possibly late 18th to early 20th century).
These pieces are representative of traditional equestrian art in the Maghreb, and more specifically of Berber culture.
The stirrups feature the emblematic Maghrebian shape:
a wide opening for the foot, a flat, flared sole suitable for traditional riding (babouches, sandals), and an upper ring forged from a single piece with the bow.
This type of robust design was intended for everyday use, both civilian and traditional cavalry (fantasia/tbourida).
The antique patina, natural oxidation of the iron, irregularities in the forging, and differences between the two pieces are evidence of authentic craftsmanship, without restoration or modern intervention.
