Here is an authentic pair of Mendi archer shields, from the Highlands of Papua New Guinea, dating from the late 19th century or early 20th century. These tribal shields, used during traditional conflicts, are made of carved wood, decorated with patterns made with natural pigments, and equipped with braided plant fiber ropes. Please note that one of the ropes is not original.
Mendi shields were used as protection against arrows, and also carried a strong spiritual and cultural dimension. Their artisanal manufacture and their patterns bear witness to the know-how and ancestral traditions of this people.
These rare pieces, loaded with history, are a treasure for collectors of tribal or ethnographic art, or for lovers of exotic and authentic decoration.
