Carved Wooden Panel – Colonial Religious Art – Philippines, 17th Century (Attributed to the Jesuits)
A very fine panel, a carved wooden icon depicting two religious figures (probably Saint Philip).
This work is believed to originate from the Philippines and is attributed to the Jesuit missions active in the archipelago in the late 17th century. At that time, Jesuit priests used art as a tool for evangelization, producing numerous liturgical pieces in a style blending Spanish Baroque influences and local craftsmanship.
The panel is hand-carved from dense wood, with rich details (haloes, folds of clothing, floral frames). It likely belonged to an altarpiece or altar furniture.
