Pyrogen holders were commonplace in cafés and bistros in the early 20th century. Their primary function was to store matches, often with a rough surface (on the rim or bottom) used as a scraper to crack them. The depiction of a couple of fishermen in traditional Normandy dress also makes this a typical regional souvenir from Le Havre.
