Pair of Terracotta Pyrogenes, fishermen - St Hamon - Le Havre - Early 20th century

Superb pair of terracotta pyrogenes, depicting a couple of Norman fishermen seated next to their baskets. These period objects, signed St Hamon, were used as match holders in bistros and homes in the early 20th century.

    - Brand: Signés St Hamon - Manufacture renowned for its regional creations

    - Origin: Le Havre (mention on base)

    - Height: 13.5 cm

    - Width : 8 cm

    - Total weight: 600 g (both pieces together)

    - Condition : Good condition, some traces of age visible on the paint (see photos)

    - Material : Hand-painted terracotta

    - Usage : Utilitarian object used as a match holder with basket receptacle

Pyrogen holders were commonplace in cafés and bistros in the early 20th century. Their primary function was to store matches, often with a rough surface (on the rim or bottom) used as a scraper to crack them. The depiction of a couple of fishermen in traditional Normandy dress also makes this a typical regional souvenir from Le Havre.
