Beautiful antique gilded wood carving depicting a Chinese imperial phoenix (Fenghuang), a mythological creature emblematic of Chinese culture and a symbol of peace, harmony and imperial virtue. Associated with the Empress, the Fenghuang occupies a central place in traditional Asian iconography.
This piece, finely hand-carved from solid wood and covered with antique leaf gilding, dates from the late 18th or early 19th century, during the Qing period. It probably comes from an architectural element, a temple, or a piece of ritual furniture such as a palanquin or a domestic altarpiece.
