Hindu statuette of a divine or votive child, India, 19th century
Statuette representing a seated male child figure, legs apart and arms folded forward. Both hands are positioned identically, as if intended to hold an object. The figure wears painted necklaces and has a stylized hairstyle. The style is typical of Indian folk art, with expressive features and marked symmetry. A cord necklace with a pendant is present, and holes in the earlobes suggest the possibility of adding jewelry, possibly interchangeable.
This could be a local child deity or a protective spirit represented in a village ritual tradition. The absence of formal iconographic attributes suggests a popular production outside of classical Hindu canonical codes. This figure could have been used: in a domestic cult, as a local processional statuette, or as a ritual effigy temporarily adorned during community festivals.
Presence of a fastening system on the back of the head. In its original condition, with signs of age and wear: chipped paint, loss of material on the headstock, and wear to the wood.
