19th-century snuffbox made of burl wood, painted decoration under glass, Biedermeier style
Antique oval snuffbox from the 19th century (circa 1820–1860), European manufacture, in the Biedermeier style. Folk art.
The box is made of burl wood, with a beautiful flamed grain and a warm brown patina. Its flattened oval shape is typical of pocket snuffboxes.
The lid is decorated with a figurative design painted on paper, protected by slightly domed antique glass.
The scene depicts a peasant subject: a man talking to a seated woman holding a child, in front of a rustic house, with a flower garden and a figure in the background. The overall effect is naive and narrative, characteristic of the Biedermeier style.
